Notice of Commencement for Environmental Screening

Initiatives

Over the past 10 years the AbitibiBowater Thunder Bay newsprint and kraft pulp mills have undergone extensive environmental improvements. These have resulted in a tremendous reduction of emissions.

AbitibiBowater's Ontario Woodlands forestry operations are at the forefront of the industry and are a source of pride for our employees and our communities. AbitibiBowater is committed to fostering the long-term well-being of the forests we manage for future generations through sustainable forest management and continual improvement of our forestry practices. We strive to balance ecological, social and economic forest values and are committed to ensure certification of all forests under our stewardship to credible and globally recognized SFM standards and subject to independent auditing. We are currently seeking FSC certification for our Caribou Forest. Conservation issues will be addressed through open dialogue with stakeholders to put in place realistic and achievable plans.

Such dramatic improvements are the result of two things: AbitibiBowater’s overall corporate commitment to environmental initiatives—and the corporation’s willingness to invest in them.

Each of our environmental initiatives is part of a broader plan to reduce our impact on the land, water, air and the energy we use.

The community benefits with a cleaner environment. The corporation wins by increasing the efficiency of our operations and the customer wins with more environmentally-friendly products. AbitibiBowater is justifiably proud of our environmental performance.
